Andersson, Mette (2005): Urban Multi-Culture in Norway: Identity Formation Among Immigrant Youth . New York : Edwin Mellen Press.

This book deals with a prime political and scholarly issue in Europe and North America, the fate of migrant youth. Instead of seeing their precarious situation in simplified cultural terms, this book argues that an understanding of their situation has to rest upon an analysis of their everyday life situation. With a focus on the mechanisms of their outsidership and their ways of dealing with it, this book develops a generative model where the different ideal types of migrant youth social organization and mentalities are demonstrated. Resting on a solid empirical study of three migrant youth contexts, a street gang, a Muslim student association, and a sports club, the analysis demonstrates how they all represent specific solutions to the problem of the spatial politics of recognition and misrecognition.

Andersson, Mette, Yngve Lithman & Ove Sernhede (2005) (eds.): Youth, Otherness, and the Plural City: Modes of Belonging and Social Life. Gothenburg: Daidalos.

Why is it that youth of ethnic minority backgrounds share certain characteristics across nation-state borders? And, what are the dynamics of identity work that urge them to search for belonging in various urban social settings? These are among the questions that this book on youth of ethnic minority background in western nation states set fore to answer. From adherence of reggae sound system cultures in London to young girls reinventing Islamic belonging in Oslo, the book covers different situations among ethnic minority youth in the UK, Australia, France and the Scandinavian countries. The theme of this book is of specific relevance in the heated discussion of terrorism following the London bombings in July 2005, as well as the recent developments in the suburbs of France.

COMPAS Annual Conference 2006, Call for Papers

‘International Labour Migration: In Whose Interests?’

The Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at Oxford University invites proposals for papers that are relevant to the theme of the COMPAS Annual Conference 2006: “International Labour Migration: In Whose Interests?”.

The papers should fall broadly within the key questions to be explored in the conference:

• What are the processes driving and shaping international labour migration? What are the impacts of international labour migration on receiving countries, migrants and their countries of origin?

• What should be the objectives of labour migration policies? How should the interests of the receiving countries be balanced with those of migrants and their countries of origin?

• What policies and governance arrangements are best suited to effectively manage international labour migration?

NAKMI (Nasjonal kompetanseenhet for minoritetshelse) har utvidet hjemmesiden. På www.nakmi.no ligger nå

– Helseinformasjon på minoritetsspråk

– Doktorgrader på minoritetshelse

– Fagbibliotek

Hjemmesiden har en arkivfunksjon med oversikt over doktorgrader de siste par årene. – Les bl.a. om tannhelse, koreanskadopterte, spiseforstyrrelser, polioskader og ulikheter i bruk av helsetjenester. Se også oversikten “fagmiljø” oppe til høyre på siden.

Vi har også en del beregnet på praktikere innen helse og omsorg. Her er litt for leger, litt for sykepleiere og helsesøstre, litt for sosialarbeidere. Vi har lagt vekt på at dette skal være materiale produsert i Skandinavia, beregnet på mennesker som bor i Skandinavia.

Fra og med i høst ligger dessuten biblioteket vårt på nett. Det er et fagbibliotek innen feltet minoriteter, kultur, migrasjon og helse. Inntil videre er det et referansebibliotek uten muligheter for utlån.

NB: Vi tar imot alle tips om flerspråklig helseinfo, om den er utviklet sentralt eller lokalt, slik at flest mulig kan få nytte av den. Vi prøver også å holde sidene oppdatert på doktorgrader og forskningsprosjekter i krysningsfeltet migrasjon – helse som er i gang eller nylig avsluttet. Send tips til eirik.viggen@nakmi.no.

Kulturell kompleksitet i det nye Norge, seminarer

Kulturell kompleksitet i det nye Norge inviterer til to større seminar på nyåret: “Trygghet i en transnasjonal tid” vil foregå 9. og 10. januar på Norlandia Karl Johan Hotell; “Normalitet og det unormale” vil foregå 13. og 14. februar på Hotel Bristol. Kulturell kompleksitet planlegg bøker om desse to temaene, og bidragsytarane til bøkene; både akademikarar og skjønnlitterære forfattarar, vil presentere sine bidrag på seminara. Deltaking på seminara skjer via påmelding (påmeldingsfrist 10. desember og 10. januar), og det er ei deltakaravgift på 300 kroner pr. seminar. Les meir om program og påmelding på våre heimesider. Sidene vil bli oppdaterte etter kvart.

Anja Bredal er sosiolog og for tida tilsett ved senter for kvinne- og kjønnsforsking (SKK) der ho arbeider med utskriving av artiklar basert på avhandlinga “Vi er jo en familie” om arrangerte ekteskap, autonomi og fellesskap blant unge norsk-asiatar. Arbeidet er støtta med forskingsmidlar frå Kulturell kompleksitet i det nye Norge.
